African-American Icons

Gallery owner and African-American art missionary Stella Jones has devoted most of the last year to showcasing superb black artists who haven’t gotten their full measure of public appreciation. To finish the series, her stylish gallery is presenting the work of sculptor Richard Hunt and painter Richard Mayhew. Both are art school trained and came of age in the 1950s. Their work makes for some interesting compare and contrasts, with Hunt’s hard-edged steel sculptures serving as an interesting counter-point to Mayhew’s lyrical, dreamlike landscapes.

Peter Fischli & David Weiss

For their exhibition ‘Visible Worlds’ in the MACBA, Zurich artists Fischli and Weiss have created an ‘anti-atlas’ of nearly 3,000 colour slides from their voyages around the world. Mounted on a vast, light table, the slides form a colourful mosaic of snapshots that forces the viewer to question standard ways of seeing the world. Also included in the exhibition are endless, unedited yet engaging videos of street scenes in Zurich. After viewing this carefully crafted show, one is left with the somehow reassuring sense that everything, everywhere is connected.

On Gold Mountain

This exhibition explores the history of a largely overlooked section of the Los Angeles population – the Chinese-Americans. Lisa See’s book lends its name to an exhibition that examines the events which characterised Chinese immigration from the end of the 18th-century to present day, both in California and through the United States. It also takes a look at the birth and development of Los Angeles’ Chinatown, with objects taken from over 50 local and national collections.
